How we approached the work, what we built, and why it matters.

The challenge

Competitive bowlers and centers had no affordable way to capture precise, real-time data on how a ball actually moves — speed, spin, tilt, and the distinct phases of a throw. Existing systems were costly or imprecise.

Our approach

Ternary engineered the full stack as Alley Analytix's engineering partner: a compact sensor built on a Nordic nRF52840 with a high-rate IMU, custom firmware, and cross-platform applications that make the data usable for coaches and players.

What we built

The firmware runs an on-device motion pipeline — sensor fusion (Madgwick AHRS), drift correction, and phase detection that segments a throw into its natural stages — streaming telemetry over Bluetooth Low Energy.

A desktop application discovers devices, visualizes live telemetry, and records sessions through guided calibration and test protocols; a mobile app and a web analytics surface, backed by a managed cloud, bring sessions and insights to players and coaches.

Outcome

The sensor and desktop application are in active field use, reliably capturing multi-phase throw data in a portable format, with the mobile and web experiences extending that analysis to players and coaching workflows.
